Chess Board Size Guide

May 19, 2022 · George Henderson

In order to choose the best chess board square size for your chess pieces, you must first consider the height of the tallest piece and the diameter of the largest piece, which is often the King. You can't just look at the height or base diameter alone because taller pieces with a narrow base need space for your hand to move and conversely, short pieces with a wide base also require space. Ultimately it is personal preference how much space is right for you and your eye. Use the below chart for the recommended size. Remember these are guidelines so take them as suggestions.
